Signs Your System Needs Attention
Most problems show up in the numbers before they show up on the roof. If your monitoring app shows production dropping month over month, a flat line on a sunny day, or one section of panels producing far less than the rest, something has changed. A warning light or error code on the inverter, the box that turns panel power into household power, is the other common sign.
Some issues are visible from the ground: a panel that has slipped, a loose conduit run, wires hanging under the array, or debris and leaves packed along the bottom edge. Inside, you may notice a tripped breaker or a disconnect that has been switched off. And a jump in your power bill with no change in how you use electricity is worth a call.
Do not climb onto the roof or open the inverter yourself. Solar equipment stays energized whenever the sun is up, even when the grid is down, and it should be handled by a licensed electrical contractor.

Repairs Done to North Carolina Rules
Repair work on a solar system is electrical work. In this state North Carolina treats residential solar PV as electrical work, and installations of any value require an electrical contractor licence, and an electrical permit is required whenever wiring or equipment changes. When a fix replaces an inverter or changes wiring, we file the permit with the City of Winston-Salem Inspections Division at the Bryce A. Stuart Municipal Building, 100 E First Street and have it inspected. Ask any company working on your system who holds the licence.
Older systems raise a second question: the utility rider. If your panels went up before the change, note that legacy Rider NM customers move to the Net Metering Bridge after December 31, 2026. When we service an older system we can explain what that change means for your credits and whether adding solar battery storage is worth considering at the same time.
Maintenance for Piedmont Weather
Panels need very little care, but they do need some. The Piedmont's hot, humid summers and cool winters bring spring pollen, summer storms, and autumn leaves. On tree-lined streets in Ardmore, the city's largest neighborhood, and around Reynolda House Museum of American Art, leaves and twigs collect under and around arrays, and pollen films the glass in spring.
A yearly maintenance visit covers a visual check of every panel, a look at mounts and flashing, a test of the inverter and disconnects, and a review of production against what the system should make. We clean panels when the data says it is worth doing rather than on a fixed schedule, and we keep notes so you can see how the system ages.
Squirrels and other animals are a real problem under arrays in wooded neighborhoods. They chew wiring and build nests where heat and debris collect. We can add critter guards around the array edge to keep them out, which is far cheaper than repairing chewed cables later.
When the Roof Needs Work
If your roof needs replacing, the panels have to come off first and go back on after. We remove the array, store it, and reinstall it once the new roof is down, with fresh flashing on every mount and a permit for the reconnection. Planning this with your roofer up front avoids a long gap without solar.
Thinking about expanding instead? A service visit is a good time to look at adding panels or upgrading an old inverter. See our solar panel installation page for how we design new systems.
Choosing a Solar Repair Company
When the original installer is gone, owners often do not know who to call. Look for a company that will look at your monitoring data before it sends a truck, that holds a North Carolina electrical contractor licence, and that gives you written findings with a price before any work starts. Be wary of anyone who wants to replace the whole system before diagnosing it; most problems come down to one inverter, one connector, or one damaged run of wire.
Ask what happens to your warranty, too. Panel and inverter makers often still honor their coverage even when the installer has closed, and we help you file the claim when a failed part qualifies. We keep a record of every visit so the next technician, or the next owner of your house, can see what was done.
